On Mission: Christ and His Spirit as Your Chairman of the Board

Excerpt from MISSION:

This requires more than putting a fish on a business card, or hanging up a cross on the office wall. Both are great ideas, but having Christ and the Holy Spirit as Chairman of the Board is recognizing that every aspect of your business or work environment can further the Kingdom Mission. If you own a software company, daily go to God and ask, “How can Your Spirit infuse our creativity and programming today?” Remember, the Mission is more than just dialog; it’s allowing the Spirit to accomplish His agenda through every outlet at our disposal. Here’s the amazing part, often we’ll have no idea how that outcome will look.

I have a dear friend named Dave who started an energy bar company. Even that last sentence description is grossly incomplete because he is really changing the face of nutrition, using an energy bar company as his mechanism. Now, he didn’t come from the nutrition field. He had little background in food preparation or chemistry. He simply believed that he heard the Spirit of God one day tell him, “Start an energy bar company.”

Since he didn’t know anything about the field or its dynamics, he followed the plan outlined in this chapter. He worked with excellence and consulted wise advisors, bringing together the best of the best in their respective fields. He also listened to the voice of the Spirit, and the Spirit was specific. Remember, this wasn’t his background and certainly not his expertise. Therefore, if he felt the Spirit say, “Add this ingredient,” he did it. If the Spirit said, “Mix the ingredients in this manner,” he did it.

You might say, “Well, that’s a little far-fetched. He may be placing a little too much trust in that still, small voice.” So let’s look at the results. Currently, he has scientists and flavor experts around the world marveling at his accomplishments in ingredient combination and taste. He has championship athletes adding his bars to their dietary programs. He has individuals take one bite of the product and ask to partner with his company.

And he has no idea where it’s going to lead.

Sure he has plans, but every day he inquires of the Holy Spirit, “what would you have me to do today?” Who knows? He may soon create a product that changes the tide of malnutrition around the world. He may develop a bar, and already is working on it, that staves off some of the world’s most prevalent diseases.

Bottom line, with Christ and His Spirit as his Chairman of the Board, the possibilities are endless, and unknown. Only God knows the end from the beginning, but Dave is living that verse in Jeremiah:

“If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses?”
Jeremiah 12:5 NIV

Dave, through the power and counsel of the Spirit, is running with horses. Dave is a man on Mission.
